Welcome to our online views page. This page contains a running photo journal of the trips that we have taken to Puerto Vallarta. Included are pictures of the condo we have for rent, some of our adventures, and some of the tourist sites we have visited in and around the area. First a short history lesson the set the stage.
Puerto Vallarta is located on the edge of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range and
is one of the most popular vacation spots in all of Mexico. Puerto Vallarta's
Bahia de Banderas Bay attracted pirates and explorers as early as the 1500's. It
was used as a stopover on long sailings as a place for the crew to relax on the
warm tropical beaches. In the mid 1850's, Don Guadalupe Sanchez Carrillo
developed the bay as a port for the silver mines by the Rio Cuale. Then it was
known as Puerto de Penas and had only about 1500 inhabitants. It remained a
village until 1918 when it was made a municipality by the state of Jalisco and
named after Ignacio L. Vallarta, the governor of Jalisco.
In th 1950's, John Huston, American film maker, came to Vallarta to film the
area's most famous movie, Night of the Iguana. He brought Liz Taylor and Richard
Burton to this sleepy village to star in this movie. The tourist trade
began booming and now it is a city of about 300,000. Each year this area sees as
many as 1.5 million tourists.
Despite the transformation, every attempt has been made to keep the town's
character and charm intact. Even the parking lot at the local supermarket is
cobblestone and by law, any house build in town must be painted white.
When you visit you will see white houses with red tile roofs on palm covered
hills overlooking glistening blue waters. Pack mules still clomp down the
cobblestone streets bringing in fresh fruits and vegetables to the markets, as
they always have.
Please see pictures of these beautiful jungles and mountains on this website,
and enjoy all the charm Mexico can offer you on your vacation!
